& the Humiliation of Interdisciplinarity Garnet Hertz Third Annual UCI Graduate Student Forum on Interdisciplinary Research May 11th 2007 These are slides from a short public lecture given 1:30pm on Friday May 11th 2007 at Calit2, as part of the Third Annual UCI Graduate Student Forum on Interdisciplinary Research. "The main point to realise is that all knowledge presents itself within a conceptual framework adapted to account for previous experience and that any such frame may prove too narrow to comprehend new experiences." (Niels Bohr, 1958) As a discussion on interdisciplinary research, this presentation proposes that inventors are often pursuing goals that don't mesh with the institutionalized form of their breakthrough. As an example, Louis and Auguste Lumiere's "La Sortie des Usines" (1895) is shown alongside Louis's 1920s work in photostereosynthesis, both interpreted as primarily explorations in depth. This work is proposed as being on a distinctly different trajectory from the institutionalized mode of representation (Musser).
